Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, a voluntary, nongovernmental, peer-based membership association dedicated to promoting standards of excellence and improvement in higher education. The decennial reaccreditation process began in 2006 and culminated in 2008 with Rutgers' reaccreditation. Over 200 members of the Rutgers community on all three campuses were involved in the development of an institutional self-study, a major component of the reaccreditation process. A team of external peer educators conducted a site visit from March 9 to March 12, 2008, to evaluate Rutgers in the context of its self-study and the Middle States standards for accreditation.
